Lighthouse

Lighthouse
Steel, water, light, white room
68″x 32″ x 32″
2017
Hillyer Art Gallery, DC

A pool of water sits on top of an inverted steel obelisk just above eye level. Every 35 seconds, an electronic assemblage is programmed to displace a small amount of water. This creates a subtle ripple. The movement of the water is translated onto the surrounding gallery walls via hidden lights embedded in the sculpture. The resulting installation produces an immersive light phenomenon similar to movements seen in an aurora borealis. The effect surrounds the viewer entirely and produces a contemplative experience.
