HABITUS

Please ensure sound is on.

I collaborated with Shawn Stone, a professional acrobat and MFA candidate in contemplative movement and dance at the University of Maryland, to produce the video Habitus.

Habitus is a performative sculpture that activates with movement and creates gentle sounds reminiscent of rain. The visual effects produced by the movement allude to prairie grass blowing in the wind, a chestnut seed, or sea anemone. A demon? Perhaps, but more of a gentle being that exists between the animate and inanimate.

“The Habitus has for its subject the faculties or powers of the soul, and as the nature of these faculties or powers is to tend to action, the habitus which inheres in them perfect them in their very dynamism, are operative habitus….We acquire this last kind of habitus through exercise and use.”

-Jacques Maritain
