Ante-chamber
Wood, light, iridescent medium, ash
120″ x 30″ x 30″
2019
Ante-chamber is a ritual object and ceremonial sculpture commemorating the life and death of family members Joe and Estelle Kane and the victims of the L’Simcha mass shooting of the congregation in Pittsburg in October 2018. Referencing Jewish funeral ritual, where a rock is placed on top of the gravestone, the installation presents a large, blackened and iridescent rock-like object suspended above a pile of ash.
This work was developed and created in grief. The object and installation are relics of this process.

From the Mourner’s Kaddish
Our few years on earth are a prologue to the drama which continues beyond time.
For thus our Sages taught:
Life is an ante-chamber to the palace of eternity.”
